If you don't do anything with it how is it supposed to do anything for you. Unless you finger comb every style a good comb is a great help. Even for those that finger comb, using a comb first to untangle your hair is a good idea. You can even use the comb in one hand and finger style it along with, to add some volume with the comb and texture with your fingers.
